How does the GP emergency station work?
If you call the GP emergency station, an experienced doctor’s assistant will answer the phone. She asks you what the complaint is. She will also ask you about your medication and your insurance details. Make sure you have it handy. Also bring your ID with you to the out-of-hours GP service. This is mandatory and can be requested. Depending on your complaint, the assistant can:
- give advice without speaking to your GP yourself. These are complaints that can medically wait until you can visit your own GP. All advice will be carefully checked by the GP on duty at the post within one hour (self-care advice)
- ask if the GP will call you back (telephone consultation)
- make an appointment for you at the GP emergency station (consultation)
- arrange for a GP to come to your home (visit)
